Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our practice and neurological care

Appointments & Visits

What should I expect at my first visit?

During your first visit, Dr. Goel will conduct a comprehensive neurological evaluation. This includes a detailed review of your medical history, a discussion of your symptoms, and a thorough neurological examination. Please bring your insurance card, photo ID, a list of current medications, and any previous medical records or test results related to your condition. The initial consultation typically takes 30-60 minutes.

Do I need a referral to see a neurologist?

Whether you need a referral depends on your insurance plan. Some insurance plans, especially HMOs, require a referral from your primary care physician before seeing a specialist. PPO plans typically do not require a referral. We recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm. You can also call our office at 551-252-5316 and we can help you determine if a referral is needed.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your insurance card, a valid photo ID, a list of all current medications (including dosages), any relevant medical records or test results, and a list of questions or concerns you'd like to discuss. If you have had any prior imaging studies (MRI, CT scans), please bring the reports or CDs if available.

How long does a neurological consultation take?

An initial neurological consultation typically takes 30-60 minutes. Follow-up visits are usually shorter, around 15-30 minutes, depending on the complexity of your condition. Diagnostic tests like EMG or EEG may require additional time.

Do you offer telemedicine/virtual visits?

Please call our office at 551-252-5316 to inquire about telemedicine availability for your specific situation. Some follow-up visits may be conducted via telemedicine when clinically appropriate.

Tests & Procedures

How do I prepare for an EMG or EEG test?

For an EMG (Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Study): Avoid applying lotions or creams to your arms and legs on the day of the test. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. A neurological consultation is required before the test can be scheduled unless you have already been evaluated by a neurologist and were referred by them for the test.

For an EEG (Electroencephalogram): Wash your hair the night before or morning of the test, but do not use any conditioners, hair sprays, or styling products. Follow any specific instructions given by our office regarding medications or sleep. A neurological consultation is required before scheduling.

What is the difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon?

A neurologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Neurologists use non-surgical approaches such as medications, therapies, and diagnostic tests. A neurosurgeon, on the other hand, is a surgeon who performs surgical procedures on the brain, spine, and nervous system. Neurologists often work closely with neurosurgeons and may refer patients for surgery when needed.

When should I see a neurologist?

You should consider seeing a neurologist if you experience persistent or recurring headaches or migraines, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, dizziness or balance problems, memory loss or cognitive changes, tremors or involuntary movements, seizures, muscle weakness, chronic pain, sleep disorders, or any other symptoms that may be related to the nervous system. Your primary care doctor may also refer you to a neurologist for further evaluation.
